Volunteers Needed!

Tolkien Moot is 100% free to participants and 100% volunteer-run since beginning in 2005. Thanks to volunteers the fun continues.

WHAT

A small annual recreation & education convention running since
2005 for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, etc.

WHEN

Third weekend of July (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday). The
convention takes place on the third weekend of each July. Will also need
volunteers on the days before and after for setup and tear-down/clean-up.

WHERE

Spokane, Washington, near Whitworth University (half way up the
north side of Five Mile Road).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Typical number of attendees each year varies between 20 to 35
participants.

CONVENTION PARTICIPANT AGE GROUPS

Years: 8-12, 13-17, 18-60+

This is a warm, friendly, supportive, family-friendly, fun event.

The event is provided to the public free of charge (though they are required to RSVP in order to participate).

This is only possible due to the generous work and support of volunteers and donors.

This event is both educational and fun for most ages.

Participants range from very casual exposure to Tolkien's works (the movies), to
some published scholars & authors, and everything in between.

Applicants may volunteer for multiple roles as desired. Numbers in parentheses indicate the maximum number of people needed for this position (minimum is one). A plus sign (+) indicates no (theoretical) limit.

EVENT ACTIVITIES

Event opening ceremonies - simultaneously broadcast live over Internet
(Google+ Hangout and Youtube channel)

Tolkien-related scholarly and fan-based discussion sessions with members
of the Tolkien Society, published authors, game designers, etc.

Annual broadcast of the Ea Tolkien Society, with members from around
the world, this year includes The Wagnerian Society as well.

Tolkien discussion panel, youth and adult panels.

The Middle-earth Talk Show broadcast

Gaming Sessions/Tables/Rooms include:
Tabletop role-playing games (different systems set in Middle-earth,
such as modified Dungeons & Dragons)

Tabletop board games

- The Hobbit Board Game
- Battle for Middle-earth Board Game (Axis & Allies style)
- ICE Lord of the Rings Board Game
- Other Tolkien-related board games as available
- Tolkien-related card games
- Tolkien-related novelty games like pictionary, trivia, charades, etc.

 

Video Games

Tolkien-related video games on multiple platforms:
* 2-3 PC's, 2x PS/2, 1x PS/4, 1x Wii
* Lord of the Rings Online
* The Hobbit by Sierra Games
* LEGO Lord of the Rings
* LEGO The Hobbit
* Aragorn's Quest
* The Lord of the Rings - Battle for Middle-earth
* Lord of the Rings - Return of the King
* Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor

Costumes/Cosplay, Live-action Role-playing (LARP)

Costumes are completely optional. About 1/4 to 1/3 of participants like to wear costumes and props, some bring
their own, while others like to borrow from our small selection (about 12 tunics).


LARP - Live-action Role-Playing and/or Cosplay. Varies between Boffer, Quest, & pure RP.

Recreation Majors (students & graduates)

College student (or graduate) Recreation Majors are welcome to help with developing additional
program plans if desired (must be Tolkien-related). Hours often apply toward your degree requirements, and we are happy to sign your hour sheets, though you need to verify with your professor first that this event meets your specific program/degree requirements.
